Shaquille O’Neal is never afraid to speak his mind, so it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to hear his latest declaration.
On Thursday night’s episode of Inside The NBA, Shaq opined that his 2000-01 NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers squad was the best team of all time.
“Derek Fisher and I went 15-1 in the Finals (playoffs). That’s the best team ever. You heard it here first,” O’Neal said Thursday night during TNT’s “Inside the NBA” broadcast. “Write it down, take a picture, fax it, put it on your DVD. That’s the best championship team ever.”
While the 2000-01 Lakers were an incredibly impressive bunch, it’s difficult to take any team other than the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls when this argument arises at your local sports bar.
The Michael Jordan-led Bulls went 72-10 in the regular season, and defeated a tough Seattle Supersonics roster 4-2 in the finals.
Whereas the Lakers faced a weak Philadelphia 76ers team that featured Allen Iverson‘s offense and an aging Dikembe Mutombo‘s defense in the paint, which truly wasn’t enough to win a championship.
