It shouldn’t really come as a surprise that Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and general manager David Griffin failed to come to terms on a contract extension, leading to the GM leaving the team immediately.
Gilbert has never signed a GM to an extension since he bought the team more than 12 years ago, so it looks like LeBron James will go from de facto GM to actual personnel guru at this point.
This may put a damper on the Cavs’ desire to land a guy like Jimmy Butler via trade this summer, as any dealings will have to go through multiple channels in order to get done.
Then again, perhaps this is just the first step toward LeBron’s second exit from Cleveland in order to form another super team elsewhere that can compete with the Golden State Warriors.
