Already a member of the Old Dominion Sports Basketball Hall of Fame, point guard Dave Twardzik (’72) will soon be apart of another historic band of great athletes. On Oct. 30, Twardzik will be one of six inductees enshrined in the Hampton Roads Hall of Fame at the Scope Arena.
Twardzik ranks second all-time at ODU in assists (80) and scored 1,660 points in his career. His 548 free throws made out of 686 attempted are career records at the school. He holds single-season records for assists (332), free throw percentage (84.5) and free throws made (222) in 1970-71.
His collegiate accomplishments include being named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches third team after the 1970-71, season and Associated Press, United Press International, Basketball News All-America teams after the 1971-72 season. He helped the Monarchs win 56 games in three years and led them to the 1971 NCAA Division II National Championships, where ODU finished second. His jersey number (14) was retired in 1972.
After ODU, Twardzik played four years for the ABA’s Virginia Squires then moved on to the NBA to play four seasons with the Portland Trailblazers. The 6-1 guard brought his fast-paced tempo and big shot making ability to a NBA Championship Trailblazers team in 1977. He retired in 1980 after an injury and his jersey number(13) was retired by the Trailblazers.
He has spent 25 years working in the NBA as an assistant coach and executive. Before this past June, he worked for the Orlando Magic as the Assistant General Manager.
Twardzik has also been inducted in the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
