How Cool Would It Be to Be Amir Garrett?

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

St. John’s Red Storm’s Amir Garrett will be leaving the school, according to ESPN. Whatever the reason may be, Garrett has one heck of a summer job playing for the Cincinnati Reds in MLB. How cool would that be?

Although there are many athletes that could and have gone pro in two different sports, let’s focus on Garrett. He was a sophomore at St. John’s and put up 5.4 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game in the 2012-13 college basketball season.

You would think that Garrett would just play baseball full time–maybe he will–but it sounds like he will be attending another school in the fall, which was said in the ESPN report linked above. How many college students can say that they are playing a professional sport, while at the same time attending school?

I officially feel like an underachiever.

St. John’s will have to go on without Garrett, but there will be plenty of talent on this team next season. That has kind of been the theme ever since Steve Lavin took over as head coach. It will be interesting to see if that talent actually meets expectations in the 2013-14 college basketball season, but the season is still months away.

As for Garrett, what a cool life he seems to be living, however, I am sure it is not easy playing in the MLB and attending school at the same time. Whether the case, making money while playing a professional sport has to be up there for being one of the greatest feelings.
