On Wednesday night, North Carolina Tar Heels‘ star guard P.J. Hairston was arrested during a license check in Durham, North Carolina. Hairston was arrested and charged with marijuana possession and driving without a license, along with the two individuals that he was driving with.
The university is aware of the matter and they are gathering additional information in regards to Hairston, who has since been released on a $1,000 bail.
However, a new detail and a potentially devastating one to boot has emerged, according to a report from ABC11 in Durham. The report indicates that a gun was found outside the vehicle during the arrest and that investigators are doing forensic testing to figure out where it came from and how it got next to the vehicle.
This is getting dicey now for Hairston and his status with the Tar Heels’ program could very well be in jeopardy given the circumstances. While a pot possession charge or driving without a license may not warrant a downright dismissal from the program or university — a gun is a completely different story.
“We are aware of the situation involving one of our athletes,” UNC Senior Associate Athletic Director for Communications Steve Kirschner told the local correspondent on Thursday. “We are still gathering information and may comment further later.”
More details will surely emerge and for Tar Heel fans, they may not be good considering what continues to emerge from this arrest and situation. North Carolina has high expectations next season, but Hairston is a very important ingredient in all that.
