Wake Forest has had three consecutive losing seasons in college basketball after they were looked at as one of the better teams in the power six conferences.

Their athletic director, Ron Wellman wants that all of that to change in this upcoming season as he called their last academic year, in all sports, a disappointing one.  He also said “our teams did not perform up to the level that we anticipated”.

Wake Forest did have to face a lot of uphill battles last season, mostly injuries and inexperience throughout all their sports teams, but that isn’t a valid excuse for their fans, especially their basketball fans.

Three straight losing seasons and a 13-18 record last season with a team that featured just three scholarship players that weren’t freshman was not acceptable to the fans who remember their school being ranked No. 1 twice in the past decade.

Wins over Miami (FL) and North Carolina State last season showed they have some talent, and with all their young players most of that talent will be back next season.

Then there was the bad.  The Demon Deacons retired Chris Paul‘s number and on the same night lost to Maryland.  They also failed to win a conference road game for the second time in three years.

Wellman felt that every player on the team got better throughout the year although their record didn’t show that.  That could be a main reason he has high hopes for this season, but he wants Wake Forest basketball to be back on the map.

He and the university have purchased Joel Coliseum and hope to have it ready by late August.  A change of scenery will hopefully bring the change all of Wake Forest wants to their basketball program.
