On Wednesday morning, the Michigan Wolverines announced that they have reached a contract extension with head men’s basketball coach, John Beilein. The deal will keep Beilein in Ann Arbor through the 2018-19 season, a wise move and a smart decision by the athletic brass at Michigan.
Beilein and the Wolverines are fresh off a run to the National Championship game and the university just saw former star point guard Trey Burke earn a sweep of all of college basketball’s major Player of the Year awards. This past season for the Wolverines was enough for the school to warrant a contract extension for Beilein, but it’s his overall core of work that speaks for itself.

Michigan has made some considerable over the years under Beilein’s guidance and this past season was certainly the culmination of that hard work, although the Wolverines would have loved to cut down those nets this past season. Even despite the losses of both Burke and junior scorer Tim Hardaway Jr. from this past year’s squad, the Wolverines should once again be in the hunt near the top of the Big Ten Conference. That’s a credit to the job that Beilein is doing on the recruiting trail.
Under this new contractual agreement, Beilein will make $2.45 million per season. This is the second contract extension that Beilein has signed with the Wolverines following the agreement the two sides reached during the 2010-11 season. Either way, Beilein will now be the head coach of the Wolverines for the next six seasons at the very least — a good move for both sides.
