The Akron Zips will not play the toughest non-conference schedule in college basketball in the 2013-14 season, but they will still have some intriguing matchups regardless.
The Zips will take on Saint Mary’s, Middle Tennessee, Oregon State and South Carolina (among others).
As you can see, none of these games scream best of the season, but that is okay. Akron does play in the Mid-American, so it is not going to schedule a bunch of powerhouse teams on a yearly basis.
The team is coming off of a season where it finished with an overall record of 26-7 and a conference record of 14-2. Not to mention, the Zips did make the NCAA tournament last year as a No. 12 seed.
Who knows if Akron will dance for a second straight season, but it has to win the majority of its non-conference games to do so. This is not a very tough schedule, but wins against Middle Tennessee and South Carolina should go a long ways.
The Gamecocks finished with a 4-14 record in the SEC last year, but it was Frank Martin‘s first year as head coach and his team was not very good. You would think that Martin would coach his team to a better record in year two and would eventually turn South Carolina around.
As for Middle Tennessee, it made the dance last year. So did Saint Mary’s and those two teams actually met in the tourney.
Zeke Marshall will no longer be on the Zips, but life goes on or at least it has to in college hoops.
