The San Diego State Aztecs will be losing their top two leading scorers, but apparently that did not matter when the team made the non-conference schedule because they will be challenged quite a bit.
For starters, the Aztecs will be taking on Kansas and Arizona. Both teams will have the talent to be ranked in the top five all season long. I am sure no one could have expected that from the Jayhawks and the Wildcats.
San Diego State will also take on Washington and the Wooden Legacy will provide some tough competition. Other than that the out-of-conference schedule seems pretty manageable, but anytime a team has to play both Arizona and Kansas it is going to have it rough.
Who knows if the Aztecs will have the talent to compete with Arizona and Kansas, but they have been a solid basketball program over the last few years. With that in mind, San Diego State will be nowhere near the favorite in the MWC. It should still finish in the top five of the conference standings, but New Mexico will be getting a lot of the hype out of this conference.
I applaud the Aztecs for challenging themselves quite a bit in their non-conference schedule, but who knows if it will pay off in the end. This team is losing some key players and it is important to note that it finished with a 23-11 record and a 9-7 MWC record with them in the lineup last season. San Diego State also only earned a No. 7 seed in the dance.
