The St. Mary’s Gaels will be losing their best player for the 2013-14 college basketball season. Who knows how the team will do without Matthew Dellavedova, but they will have a pretty easy non-conference schedule regardless.
The Gaels’ most notable matchups will be against South Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Akron and Murray State. However, who knows if any of these teams will be NCAA tournament teams in the upcoming season.
There is a chance that St. Mary’s will have to play tougher competition in the Diamond Head Classic. It opens up against the Gamecocks, but other notable teams in the field will be Boise State and Iowa State. Both of those teams could make the dance in the upcoming season, but it is the Broncos who will likely be the favorite in this one.
However, St. Mary’s will take on Boise State in a non-bracketed game in the Diamond Head Classic.
It will be interesting to see if the Gaels will be a tournament team in the 2013-14 season, but their non-conference schedule will not have any huge resume builders on it. Conference play is always a big thing, especially if St. Mary’s can beat the Gonzaga Bulldogs at least once.
It is important to note that St. Mary’s out-of-conference schedule was not brutal or anything close to it last season, but the team still managed to make the NCAA tournament as a No. 11 seed.
It would be huge on the resume if the Gaels could win the Diamond Head Classic, but we will see if that will be the case once it actually starts.
