The Florida State Seminoles and the Florida Gators have been two of the most disappointing teams in college basketball to start the 2014-15 season, but will face off in a crucial momentum swinging game on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Florida State started off the season 4-5, but have won three straight to pull their record to a respectable 7-5. With conference play in the top heavy ACC looming, the Seminoles have not beaten any quality opposition, so a win against Florida could be key to their 2015 NCAA tournament hopes. Remember, the Gators should be one of the better teams in the SEC, meaning that this could be a huge resume booster once March swings around.
Florida has quietly won four straight after a rough 3-4 start to the season. Expected to be one of the better teams in the nation, the Gators have been nothing but disappointing. However, Billy Donovan’s teams always get better as the season drags on, meaning that a win against FSU and their next opponents, the Connecticut Huskies, could mean that a top three finish in the SEC results in a trip to the 2015 NCAA tournament.
The main difference between Florida and Florida State this season has been the difficulty of opposition. Although both teams have been disappointing, UF have only lost to teams ranked at some point in the season, whereas FSU have lost to several teams not expected to make the 2015 NCAA tournament.
Give this one to the much more talented Gators, and make sure to keep an eye on Florida as they continue to improve throughout the course of the season.
Prediction: Florida 66, Florida State 58
