Villanova vs. Georgetown: Game Preview, Prediction

The Big East is the most convoluted conference in college basketball. Of the 10 teams, seven have at least 12 wins, and eight teams have a legitimate chance at either making or making a push for the 2015 NCAA tournament.

The Georgetown Hoyas are one of the teams that sit in the middle of the conference that still needs a ton of work to make it to the NCAA tournament. However, the Hoyas will be presented with an enormous opportunity to jump into tournament contention by upsetting the Villanova Wildcats, who face off at Verizon Center on Monday, Jan. 19, at 9 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

Villanova, however, have won four straight after being upset at the hands of the Seton Hall Pirates. During this streak, the Wildcats have beaten all opponents by double digit margins and have never looked like losing. Nova is coming on strong at the right time in conference play, and it looks like their loss to Seton Hall woke them up instead of shaking them up.

Georgetown have only lost two games in conference play, but have yet to play any of the better teams in the Big East. With a rough stretch at the end of the season that includes St. John’s and Seton Hall twice, the Hoyas need to get a marquee win soon.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats are playing far too well to give up another game to subpar opposition. If D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera can score 25 or more points, then Georgetown stands a chance. However, don’t expect an upset, and expect Nova to continue to cruise through conference play.

Prediction: Villanova 87, Georgetown 75
