That is the amount the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets scored in a pathetic 29-point loss to the Virginia Cavaliers. The Yellow Jackets’ leading scorer for the game was Marcus Georges-Hunt with seven points on 3-9 from the field. Overall, the team shot a paltry 24.5 percent and tossed a big donut from behind the 3-point line on 12 attempts.
Ramblin’ wreck? More like a rambling dumpster fire for head coach Brian Gregory. The gap between the Cavaliers and Yellow Jackets shows how far the talent level is for both clubs.
The Yellow Jackets have gone winless in ACC league play with six straight losses and are 9-9 overall. The Cavaliers are undefeated at 18-0 and one of the best teams in the conference, if not the entire country. While the Cavaliers are a superb defensive team, someone must question the effort of the Yellow Jackets in this game. Scoring 12 points in the second half alone looks to show no fight or pride for your team.
If that is the case, that should fall on Gregory and set his foot out the door effective at the end of this season. It is one thing to lose games, but to show little or no effort and get embarrassed is another. Every student, fan and player associated with the Yellow Jackets should be ashamed of the product on the court.
Fact of the matter is, Gregory is 52-61 overall with the Yellow Jackets in four seasons. That number looks even worse when you take into account he has won just 16 conference games in his tenure. Barring a miracle, the Yellow Jackets will finish with a losing record for the third time in four years under Gregory, with his best season going just 16-15 and 6-12 in the ACC back in 2012-13.
Gregory had success at his former job as the head coach of the Dayton Flyers, winning 20 or more games in five of his eight seasons and reaching an NCAA or NIT postseason tournament in five of them. However, that success has simply not carried over with the Yellow Jackets.
The blowout loss to the Cavaliers shows the recruiting gap for the standing best and worst team in the conference. The talent on the Yellow Jackets has them 278th in points per game out of 347 D1 schools. Only the Clemson Tigers are worse in the league at 285th, and they have at least won two league games.
If you were to look at his predecessor, Paul Hewitt won 28 games and was the NCAA runner-up with future NBA player Jarrett Jack in his fourth season with the Yellow Jackets. Clearly, it seems evident this year’s team does not have a Jack or the ability to win 28 games, much less win 20.
It seems Gregory has struggled to recruit a level of respectable talent that can play in the league. Trying to get recruits that of a top 25 program might be an unrealistic goal, but the Yellow Jackets should be able to at least stay afloat and not look like a sinking ship.
To be fair, Gregory has lost some close games this season in the league, including a double overtime loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and a one-point loss to the Syracuse Orange. The bottom line is they are still losses in the book and sports at any level are about results. Gregory has simply not shown those results.
I hate calling for people to be fired, but Gregory needs to go. The Yellow Jackets might struggle to win three league games and are just looking like the laughing stock of the conference.
