Kentucky Basketball Poised To Finish Season Undefeated

The Virginia Cavaliers are a fantastic basketball team. They put remarkable pressure on the ball and force an even more remarkable amount of contested shots. It would take an almost legendary team to beat this year’s Cavs for the best team in the country.

Enter the ridiculous Kentucky Wildcats. The Wildcats and Cavaliers are still the only two remaining undefeated teams, but Virginia shouldn’t get there hopes up about ousting UK as the best team in the country.

The Cavaliers still need Kentucky to lose to make their hopes for the No. 1 overall seed a reality, but if that happens, Virginia’s strength of schedule in conference play could give them the edge. That means if Virginia can run the gauntlet against No. 4 Duke, No. 13 North Carolina and No. 10 Louisville, then finish their regular season schedule by beating Louisville again, and Kentucky loses, then Virginia could wind up with the No. 1 seed. None of that seems likely at this point.

Seriously, who can get everything right in order to actually beat this deep, long, experienced Kentucky team? Who among the nine teams remaining on Kentucky’s schedule, none of which are currently ranked, can do what it takes to get the best of this deep and talented squad through 40 full minutes of basketball?

Kentucky was far from their best tonight against the Missouri Tigers — William Cauley-Stein was still scoreless with less than three minutes to play — and they still took won on the road with relative ease. Kentucky will get an inspired fight from some legitimate conference opponents, including Georgia and the LSU Tigers. Regardless of how fired up each team playing them should be for the rest of the season, the Wildcats still look like they have what it takes to finish the regular season with an unblemished record.
