The Big East is arguably the most difficult conference from top to bottom in college basketball, with seven teams either predicted to be in or just on the outside of the 2015 NCAA Tournament. Four of these teams currently sit at 15 wins, and with around six regular-season games remaining, a loss could mean the difference from going to the Big Dance or the NIT.
Two of these 15-win Big East teams face off on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1, as the Georgetown Hoyas travel to Prudential Center to face the Seton Hall Pirates.
Georgetown will be disappointed to have lost two in a row, but the Hoyas will feel confident that they are still en route to a tournament berth. There is a distinct lack of bad losses on their resume, meaning that if they can get to around 20 wins, there are very few scenarios in which this team goes to the NIT instead.
Seton Hall has lost five of their last seven after a strong start to their conference schedule. More importantly, however, their last two games have been back to back losses to two of the lower RPI teams in the Big East, the DePaul Blue Demons and Marquette Golden Eagles.
Both of these teams don’t jump out at you on paper; they seem pretty evenly matched. However, Georgetown boasts an elite college basketball scorer in D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera who should be able to lead the Hoyas to victory. Seton Hall is a very good that is more than capable of winning, especially at home, but whether they win or lose will come down to controlling the paint, which I don’t expect them to do.
Prediction: Georgetown 74, Seton Hall 68
