The 2015 NCAA tournament could be the first chance for the Davidson Wildcats to be known for more than just the humble proving grounds that launched Stephen Curry‘s career. Davidson has played giants in the regular season, and although they’ve often fallen, the experience could be beneficial when they begin the Big Dance with the No. 7 seeded Iowa Hawkeyes.
The Hawkeyes hail from the physical Big Ten and snagged a quality win over the North Carolina Tar Heels out of conference. Iowa survived a really good schedule, entertaining both the Texas Longhorns and the Syracuse Orange at a neutral site, earning a No. 28 ranked strength of schedule.
The only common opponent between both Iowa and Davidson was North Carolina. Davidson was defeated soundly, 90-72 at a neutral site, while Iowa won by five (60-55) at home. Both of those games were in 2014 though, and as we all know, everything changes in March.
What To Watch For
Iowa is a poor shooting team that can rebound, while Davidson’s offense is high-powered and unselfish. If Iowa can keep Davidson from getting second-chance points, the Hawkeyes could win this game on pace by dictating Davidson’s tempo. The Wildcats have to play with added influence and will need to move the ball effectively, finding the open man and catching Iowa late on defensive adjustments.
Prediction
It wouldn’t be March Madness without the bounty of first-round upsets, and I predict Davidson to win the game through spacing and pacing, making the extra pass and hitting big shots while Iowa bows to the added pressure of being the higher seed.
Davidson 68, Iowa 66
