The Wichita State Shockers and Kentucky Wildcats competed in a magical game during last year’s NCAA tournament, and we might get a chance to see another classic rematch in the Elite Eight.
Obviously the Shockers are going to have a tough test against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Sweet 16, but if they can win that game, Wichita State will likely end up facing Kentucky again after they win with ease over the West Virginia Mountaineers.
On paper, the matchup between Kentucky and Wichita State is very one-sided in favor of the Wildcats because of their obvious size advantage. But the Shockers are not afraid of any team in the country, and they will want redemption against Kentucky. Wichita State could have an opportunity for redemption by spoiling the Wildcats’ perfect season, and that would be some remarkable story.
Coach Gregg Marshall has the Shockers playing like they have a chip on their shoulder with absolutely no pressure at all. Players are stepping up that some people have never heard of like Evan Wessel, Zach Brown and Shaquille Morris, which is terrible news for opposing teams
This potential matchup is something that the NCAA tournament needs, because it would be one of the best storylines and games of the tourney. It could be an all-out dogfight in the Elite Eight between the two terrific teams, and no one wants to win that game more than the Shockers.
A rematch between the Shockers and Wildcats would feature two of the best coaches in the country in a potential chess match. This is what everyone wants to see, so hopefully it’s the way things work out this coming weekend.
