The Georgia Bulldogs were rather unlucky to be paired with an angry, over-seeded Michigan State Spartans squad in their first game of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, but that didn’t stop Mark Fox and co. from having another Top 4 finish in the SEC. Fox has been rewarded by the Bulldogs with a 5five-year extension on his contract that sees him making over 2 million a year.
Arguably the most underrated and important aspect of a successful college basketball program is stability, which is exactly what the Bulldogs are continuing to get by extending Fox’s contract. This is an extremely positive move for a team that continues to hover in the Top 5 of the SEC.
Look at the schools that continue to have success across the college basketball landscape. Roy Williams with the North Carolina Tar Heels, Bill Self with the Kansas Jayhawks, Billy Donovan formerly with the Florida Gators, Rick Pitino with the Louisville Cardinals, Mike Krzyzewski with the Duke Blue Devils and Jim Boeheim with the Syracuse Orange are all head coaches who have been in that position for at least 10 years and, in some cases, far more. These are schools which consistently compete in the upper echelon of the Top 25 rankings year in and year out.
Georgia may not have had much success lately, but they’re one of the few SEC schools that have avoided getting stuck in the dreaded cycle of good seasons immediately followed by bad ones that so many SEC schools have become known for.
With Kenny Gaines, Charles Mann and J.J. Frazier all returning for the Bulldogs, Georgia is set up to make another run to the NCAA Tournament, especially now that Fox knows his job is safe until at least 2020.
