Last year was very forgettable for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
They enter year two of the Danny Manning era with the assurance that things will probably be better than they were last year. That isn’t because they created a solid foundation. It’s only because they put themselves in a position where they can’t do any worse.
Wake Forest can be a good program. Over the years, it has been on the right side of quite a few upsets. On more than one occasion, the Demon Deacons have actually beaten the team that would end up winning the national championship. They just haven’t won it themselves. They hold four ACC tournament trophies. They just haven’t won it since 1996 when Tim Duncan was still on the team.
Last year, this team lost 19 of the 32 games it played in and did a horrible job of shooting the ball. Less than 50 percent from the floor in a conference where so many teams can light it up isn’t going to get it. Neither is giving up almost 75 points a game. They are fortunate to have Devin Thomas averaging double figures in both points and rebounds so far this season, but he has to improve from the free-throw stripe. Well, so does everybody else. 69 percent is just awful.
Bryant Crawford and Konstantinos Mitoglou have both been a benefit on the offensive side of the floor as well and are actually hitting their free throws, but both are turnover machines. They’re winning close against the average opponents and got the doors blown off by the Vanderbilt Commodores.
That’s not a good sign as they approach their conference schedule. Expect them to win the next three games, which are also against remedial athletic talent, but this team has a long way to go before they become a great team. Don’t let their current record fool you.
