The Purdue Boilermakers can add a nice notch to the old belt with a victory against the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday. The Lobos might not be getting the most hype of all time, but they are still a team that typically does some dancing in March. They are also a team that only brings one loss to this game.
New Mexico lost to the USC Trojans and are still in search for a signature win. As for the Boilermakers, well, they have started off the 2015-16 college basketball season red-hot (that might be a bit of an understatement). Purdue is 7-0, on the verge of cracking the top 10 and their best wins have come against the Florida Gators and Pittsburgh Panthers.
Here are some must-watch players for both teams in 2015-16: Isaac Haas, A.J. Hammons and Caleb Swanigan for Purdue, and Tim Williams, Elijah Brown and Cullen Neal for New Mexico (you know, just to name a few).
All three of the Lobos players mentioned above are averaging 17 or more points per game, so that will certainly be a fun one for Matt Painter‘s defense. Then again, the Boilermakers are only giving up 57.6 points per game, which is good enough for sixth-best in the country.
New Mexico’s chances of winning this non-conference battle would skyrocket if it was playing at home, but that is unfortunately not the case. Purdue is a serious Big Ten title threat … and national championship contender. Putting those two things together, it would not be a surprise if it kept that perfect record going a few more games or so.
PREDICTION: Lobos 67, Boilermakers 77
