This college hoops matchup would be a lot more meaningful if the NCAA didn’t drop the hammer on the SMU Mustangs. After all, the Mustangs are ranked in the top 25 and were a virtual lock to go dancing in 2016, but the NCAA, once again, dropped the hammer (and a ban) on them.
That said, the Mustangs are a fun bunch to watch, and they will be going up against the Michigan Wolverines, a team that has seen better days but still has some talent.
The Wolverines already have losses against the Connecticut Huskies and Xavier Musketeers, but they did capture wins against the Texas Longhorns and NC State Wolfpack. They do have a healthy Caris LeVert, though, and a healthy Caris LeVert is a very scary thing for the rest of college basketball.
The Mustangs’ most notable win has come against the Stanford Cardinal. Their loaded roster — that once again should be partaking in the tourney — is highlighted by Nic Moore.
If the Mustangs can capture the W in this battle, who knows how long they will go undefeated? As for the Wolverines, they could really use this victory for a couple of reasons: (1) To gain another resume booster. (2) To show the rest of the college hoops world (and the Big Ten) that they are legit in 2015-16.
It should be a rather solid non-conference showing no matter who comes out on top.
PREDICTION: Wolverines 64, Mustangs 56
