Fan is the root word of fanaticism. That’s not a knock on most fan bases, but it’s true. You wouldn’t imagine how angry it makes people when they are told the truth about the team they cheer for. Most of the world can hear the truth. But it’s sometimes harder for fans, graduates, and members of a student body to see what’s actually happening.
Enter: the Purdue Boilermakers. There are some positives. Purdue is ranked. That’s awesome. Purdue made the tournament last year. That’s magnificent. This year, they basically return the same team and then added one of the best players in high school basketball last year to the roster. That’s exciting.
Now, let’s visit the negatives. There is too much hype about making the tournament. Think about it, there are 68 tournament teams and 60 of them truly have no business being there. Even the Big South Conference gets an entry for goodness sake. Let’s not use the tournament to justify whether a team is great or not. Yes, there are upsets. But as the tournament progresses, it always ends up being the top seeds who are there at the end.
Purdue lost 13 games last year including the first game they played in that tournament. This year, they struggled to a 13-point win over a team that finished in a ninth place tie in the ACC. They also struggled to put away another team that finished eighth in the SEC. Both of those games were actually closer than the score indicates.
They’ve got one guy who can shoot the deep ball, A.J. Hammons. As a team, they hit less than 50 percent from the floor and less than 75 percent from the free throw line. As the season progresses, the games will be closer. Pressure will be higher. Missing 25 percent of your free throws is a problem. Expect a tournament appearance. Purdue may even be able to count on a sweet sixteen appearance, but other than that, don’t count on too much.
