TV Schedule: Tuesday, Jan. 19, 9:00 p.m. ET, ESPNU
Arena: Moody Coliseum, Dallas, Tex.
Line: SMU (-13)
At 17-0, the No. 8 SMU Mustangs are the only remaining undefeated team in college basketball.
That being said, the Mustangs have yet to face a ranked opponent and will likely avoid doing so for the remainder of the season, as SMU is the only team in the American Athletic Conference with less than four losses. Once thought to be one of the better conferences in college basketball, the AAC has shaped up to be a fight for second place, as it looks like SMU has already run away with the conference.
Next up for the Mustangs is a matchup with the Houston Cougars, who have lost their last two games and are struggling to find their form in AAC play.
The Cougars are one of the more streaky teams in college basketball, boasting three separate win streaks this season of three or more games. Unfortunately, their lone “good” win this season came against the LSU Tigers, so Houston will need to start winning now if they want to make the 2016 NCAA tournament. An above average team on offense and defense, Houston will suffer due to the struggles of other AAC teams and must win their game on Tuesday night to stand a slight chance at earning an at-large bid to the Big Dance.
The Mustangs, however, should win fairly easily at home. SMU might not boast the wins of some of the other top 10 teams, but undefeated is undefeated. The Mustangs are the real deal, and I expect them to finish the season with just one or two lsses.
Prediction: SMU 77, Houston 65
