The South Carolina Gamecocks have been one of the biggest surprises of the 2015-16 college basketball season, and they have a 16-1 record and top 25 ranking to prove it — because how many people predicted that one? In fact, South Carolina is the only team in the SEC with just one loss … if you can believe that.
Next up, Frank Martin‘s Gamecocks will take on the Ole Miss Rebels.
Ole Miss enters this contest with a 12-5 record. Therefore, the Rebels need to rack up those wins if they plan on making the NCAA tournament, and knocking off South Carolina would be a great start.
Ole Miss might have a rather solid record, but that resume isn’t looking as solid. The Rebels have yet to beat a ranked opponent on the year, and they are also just 2-3 in conference play.
South Carolina also doesn’t have the best resume in college hoops, but it does hold a 3-1 record in SEC play.
Let’s talk some numbers: The Gamecocks are putting up 78.5 points per game and are only giving up 66.6 PPG in the process. Meanwhile, the Rebels come in averaging 75.5 PPG and are allowing 71.8 PPG.
The biggest difference in this battle: Ole Miss’ Stefan Moody. The scoring machine is averaging a monstrous 24.3 points per contest, and he will likely go off in the scoring department in this one.
South Carolina might have an impressive record going for it, but good luck to Martin’s team on the road, and good luck to any team in the country trying to contain Moody.
PREDICTION: Gamecocks 70, Rebels 76
