If we’re being honest, most of us are still trying to get used to the fact that the Miami Hurricanes have quietly built a respectable program. While we’re being honest, let’s just go ahead and say this crept up on most of us. The Hurricanes are no longer an ACC team that you can pencil in as a loss. There’s been a slip in quality from time to time, but that’s to be expected. We’re talking about guys who are in school and are between 18 and 22 years old. They aren’t going to be focused every single game. In the Hurricanes’ case, there’s also the fact that they’re not used to being a team people have to pay attention to.
Ladies and gentlemen, Jim Larranaga is doing his job. Miami has become an attractive spot for recruits; and as of November 19, they sport the No. 8 ranked recruiting class in the country. That’s good enough to be third in the ACC, trailing only the Duke Blue Devils and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Things may be looking up in South Florida next year.
Bruce Brown is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound combo guard from Vermont. He’s ranked as the 34th best player in the country and the fifth at his position. He’ll be joined by Rodney Miller, who won’t be staying home and playing in Virginia but will be adding his 6-foot-11, 220-pound frame to Miami’s frontcourt. As if that isn’t reason enough to send shock waves through the conference, both will be joined by the valedictorian of this class, Dewan Huell. He’s a 6-foot-10 power forward who decided to stay in his hometown and play for the Hurricanes. He’s also listed as the 23rd best player in the country.
Next year, it’s going to be fun to watch this team again.
