The SEC might be down this season, but there are still plenty of teams battling it out for a spot in the 2016 NCAA tournament. The Florida Gators and Vanderbilt Commodores meet that criteria, and the two SEC foes will battle it out later on today.
The Gators enter with an overall record of 13-6 and SEC record of 5-2. The Commodores enter with a record of 11-8 and conference record of 3-4.
Just in case you weren’t keeping tabs, it was Vanderbilt who was supposed to contend for a conference title this season. A 3-4 record doesn’t exactly scream that.
The Gators have now won three contests in a row while the Commodores will do battle riding a one-game losing streak. Florida might be tied for second place in the conference standings, but it could use all of the signature wins it can get right about now (you know, if it wants to make the Big Dance). Unfortunately, the SEC doesn’t provide a ton of that this season. After all, the Kentucky Wildcats are down. That said, the Texas A&M Aggies have been fire lately, and they are also undefeated in SEC play.
Florida has three guys who are putting up double figures in the scoring department and Vanderbilt has two. The Gators are putting up 74.5 points per game and giving up 64.9 PPG in the process. Giving the ball to Vandy, it is averaging 77.8 PPG and allowing 66.4 PPG.
Both teams have a lot of work to do. Nonetheless, I am predicting Dorian Finney-Smith to lead the Gators to a victory, which will be huge when it comes to being part of March Madness.
PREDICTION: Gators 71, Commodores 65
