The Big 12/SEC Challenge is filled with some must-see matchups — and this is one of them.
The Vanderbilt Commodores and Texas Longhorns both have a shot at making the Big Dance this season. Luckily for us, they will take the court against one another in this challenge.
Vanderbilt will do battle with an overall record of 12-8 and SEC record of 4-4. Texas enters this clash with an overall record of 13-7 and Big 12 record of 5-3. Both teams have been challenged early and often in the 2015-16 college basketball season, so take those records as you will.
The Commodores are coming off a big win against the Florida Gators, which brings their winning streak to one. Texas is also only on a one-game winning streak. Said one-game winning streak started against the TCU Horned Frogs.
Getting the numbers down: Six players on Vanderbilt are averaging eight or more points per game. Meanwhile, the Longhorns have three guys who are averaging double figures in the scoring department. The Commodores are averaging 76.9 points per game and allowing 66 PPG. Texas comes in averaging 73.3 PPG and is giving up 67.7 PPG.
Texas has the huge advantage of playing at home, and I am going to push that momentum train in its favor.
Just remember this: Shaka Smart is already turning this program around, and he has wins (this season, of course) against North Carolina, Iowa State and West Virginia to prove it.
Nonetheless, Texas should do its part for the Big 12 in this challenge.
PREDICTION: Commodores 69, Longhorns 79
