The SMU Mustangs are one of the better teams in the country, yet they can’t partake in postseason play. That said, the Connecticut Huskies could still boost that resume with a win over the Mustangs.
SMU stands at an impressive 21-3 overall and 9-3 in the AAC. Meanwhile, the Huskies are 18-7 overall and 8-4 in AAC play. Basically, this game is huge for Connecticut in more ways than one.
Connecticut is no lock to make the dance, but a win against SMU would get it one step closer to achieving that feat, and would also get it one step closer to winning a conference title.
SMU might be vulnerable as of late, but it is coming off of a big victory against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. You know, the same Gonzaga Bulldogs team that was supposed to compete for a national title in 2015-16. Connecticut’s winning streak is also at one game.
Time to let the season averages steal the show: The Mustangs are putting up 79.4 PPG and giving up 64.3 PPG, while the Huskies enter this AAC clash averaging 73.8 PPG and allowing 62 PPG. That said, defense very well could be the name of the game in this contest.
SMU might not be able to partake in the March Madness festivities, but it can surely do some damage when it comes to who represents the AAC in the dance. It can also steal the show when it comes to the AAC title.
Those factors should be more than enough to keep the Mustangs going, which could mean bad news for the Huskies.
PREDICTION: Mustangs 68, Huskies 64
