What a huge disappointment this tournament has been for the Pac-12. The selection committee saw fit to give the conference seven teams, and six have been eliminated before the end of the first weekend. It’s all on the No. 1 seeded Oregon Ducks to maintain what little reputation the Pac-12 has left against the upset-minded Saint Joseph’s Red Hawks.
The Ducks are getting the least attention of the No. 1 seeds, and maybe they prefer it that way, but they definitely have talent to boast of. Forwards Dillon Brooks and Elgin Cook were both First-Team All-Conference. Brooks does a little bit of everything for the Ducks, leading the team in points, rebounds and assists, and Cook is second in nearly in every category, with the offense contingent on their successes.
After their win over the Cincinnati Bearcats in the opening round, St. Joe’s will again lean heavily upon Isaiah Miles and DeAndre Bembry. The duo scored a combined 42 points in the Hawks’ 78-76 win. They will need to do more if they intend to take down an Oregon offense that is one of the best in the country. St. Joe’s was 9-of-24 from three-point range in the opener, but they will need to be much better if they want to pull off a miraculous upset.
If Oregon were to lose it would be a nightmare for the Pac-12 and another stunning upset in a tournament that’s already chock-full of them. The Ducks shouldn’t take St. Joe’s lightly, as they have two elite scorers and were second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring. This will be a wake-up call for Oregon, but they will prevail.
Prediction: Oregon 84, Saint Joseph’s 77
