The Vanderbilt Commodores head into April without head coach Kevin Stallings, who left for the Pittsburgh Panthers after a long and somewhat disappointing stretch at Vandy. The coach who should be at the top of their list now is Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall, who is the best mid-major coach in the country. Although Vanderbilt should definitely give him a call, he’s highly unlikely to take the job. Here are five of the simplest reasons why.

Marshall’s well over $3 million salary may seem like chump change to a rich program like Vanderbilt, but after getting out of Kevin Stallings’ expensive buyout, they look like they might not want to spend a ridiculous amount of money.

Marshall put Wichita State basketball on the map. The Shockers are one of the most consistent programs in the NCAA; why would Marshall leave that for a consistent underachiever like Vanderbilt?
3. Turnaround At Vanderbilt

With Wade Baldwin IV declaring for the NBA draft and Damian Jones likely to do the same, the Commodores will be without two of their top players next season. Kentucky should have their run of the SEC, so it would be a miracle for Vandy to compete in their first post-Stallings season. Even without Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet, Wichita State should be able to succeed in MVC play.

What Marshall says goes, and how he wants to run the basketball program goes. At Vanderbilt, he would have to work his way up to earning that kind of power and trust again, something that takes a long time and a lot of wins.

At Wichita State, Gregg Marshall is practically a god. If he wins just one game next season, no one will even think of firing him. At Vanderbilt, he could have a down season in year one and people would be lamenting the price Vandy had to pay to pry him away from Wichita State.
