Dan Hurley Might Have To Pay UConn $1.9M If Leaves for Los Angeles Lakers
Dan Hurley might have to pay the UConn Huskies an estimated $1,875,000 if he decides to leave and become a coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, who are reportedly interested in hiring him.
Hurley has already signed into a six-year contract worth $32,100,000 effective until March 2029.
Such high costs are typically created by the hiring team and represent one more factor in their calculations of getting their selected candidate to stay with them longer rather than pursue new opportunities. For example, when UConn hired Hurley in 2018, they paid a $1 million buyout from Rhode Island.
Hurley’s contract, which he signed in June last year paid him about $4.9M this past year, including a maintenance bonus of $500,000 in November. This amount does not include another $500,000 for winning the national championship and a handful of other incentives.
