Denicos Allen has been a force in the middle of the defense for the Michigan State Spartans for the past two seasons. Last week, the junior linebacker underwent surgery on his foot/ankle area.

The details of his surgery are relatively unknown as the only information released was via Twitter when the improving linebacker tweeted that he had undergone surgery and included a picture of his immobilized leg.

Allen was third on the team in tackles in 2012 with 79 and proves to be one of the best linebackers in the Big Ten. He also had 10 tackles for loss and three sacks last season.

Sophomore Taiwan Jones, a projected starter in 2013 and fill-in for senior linebacker Chris Norman last season, has also udergone surgery this offseason. He had loose cartilage removed from his knee earlier this offseason, making the Spartans linebacking corps look battered and beaten.

Jones looks to return for spring drills that begin on March 19, but there’s no word on when Allen will be returning to action.

Allen was predicted by ESPN to be the defensive player of the year in the Big Ten prior to the 2012 season and was named to the All-Big Ten preseason first team as well.

There’s no questioning his leadership ability as well as skill from sideline to sideline on the football field, but this leg surgery could set the veteran linebacker behind while the rest of the team progresses and puts the disappointing 2012 season behind them.

If there’s one thing Michigan State football is known for, it’s churning solid linebackers out year after year. Allen may be the next one in that line.
