The West Virginia Mountaineers will unveil new uniforms at the annual Blue and Gold Spring Game today at 2 p.m.
This is a move that has been a long time coming. The Mountaineers have experimented slightly with uniform tweaks and modifications, but aside from new gray uniforms last year, which were hit and miss with the fans, the Mountaineers have had the same uniform combinations for a very long time.
The Nike Pro Combat Jersey’s the team featured in 2011 were a huge success with fans, players, coaches and pretty much anyone with eyes. The jerseys gave the team a crisp, clean look and looked great on the field.
There hasn’t been any talk about the new 2013 uniforms other than the fact that they are being unveiled at the spring game. Anyone who has mentioned anything about these uniforms is speculating.
I can only imagine what these uniforms will look like. Personally, I’m a fan of the wild, modern-age Oregon Ducks and Maryland Terrapins type uniforms. A lot of people don’t like these and I respect their opinion, but I think they look great and add a very modern feel to the game.
Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your view, it seems unlikely that the Mountaineers would release anything too flashy, as the fan base in Morgantown–particularly older fans who have supported the team for a very long time–tend to be pretty conservative when it comes to messing with the uniforms.
Last year, as I mentioned earlier, the Mountaineers released solid gray uniforms as an alternate. These were accepted by some fans initially, but as the season grew older less people were fond of them.
Those uniforms were just alternates. The uniforms being unveiled later today–as far as I know–are the official home and away uniforms for the 2013 season.
Mountaineer fans are on the edge of their seats. There’s a football game in Morgantown this afternoon!
