Florida State Seminoles Will Look to Jameis Winston at Quarterback

Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

There was expected to be a quarterback battle with the Florida State Seminoles before the 2013 college football season began with the graduation of E.J. Manuel. That changed last week when Clint Trickett decided to transfer, leaving the starting job probably to Jameis Winston. Winston impressed during the team’s spring game throwing for 205 yards on 12 completions. Winston didn’t see the field at all last season as he took a redshirt year, but it looks like coach Jimbo Fisher is going to roll with him when next season begins.

Winston is an impressive looking quarterback at least being 6’4″. The question is going to be whether Winston can lead a Seminoles team that went 12-2 last season towards a national championship. The schedule doesn’t seem that imposing, so even with a redshirt freshman quarterback, Florida State could end up winning nine or ten games. I was a bit surprised that Trickett decided to transfer because I thought he would have the inside track to the starting job since he saw the field the last two seasons.

Florida State is going through a bit of a transition at the quarterback position. Winston will have growing pains obviously but is likely going to be the answer when the 2013 season begins on Labor Day. I will be quite curious to see what happens with him and if he can keep the Seminoles’ offense going this season. I’m a little leery still about this decision, but it all stems from the transfer of Trickett. There will be a lot decided over the next four months.
