Freshman linebacker Matthew Thomas had to feel a little awkward when he reported to Florida State for workouts this summer. The five-star talent had committed to the Seminoles in February, but started to waver a month before he was to leave for college. Reports surfaced that Thomas wanted to be released from his scholarship so he could choose another college.
That news made national headlines, not only because he is a tremendous talent, but also because it is so rare. Recruits frequently change their minds during the recruiting process, but once they sign on National Signing Day, they usually have their minds made up. But in this situation, Thomas wanted out.
Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher agreed to release Thomas from his scholarship, but only if he sat out the 2013 season (like nearly all transfers do). After giving that some consideration, Thomas decided to stick with Florida State and reported to campus early this summer.
Make no mistake, players on the Florida State team were paying close attention to the drama surrounding Thomas, but it appears they haven’t held his indecision against him.
Fellow linebacker, senior Telvin Smith, told reporters that Thomas has adjusted well to the Seminoles locker room. Smith said, “He’s fitting in well, and he’s starting to open up. He’s starting to be Matthew Thomas.”
Thomas has been practicing with the Noles for the last two weeks, and has received rave reviews from players and coaches alike. He’s getting plenty of reps with the second team, but that’s not surprising, given the rare athletic abilities Thomas possesses.
At 6-foot-3, 215 pounds, Thomas packs a punch when he gets to the ball. He is an explosive tackler who is relentless in his pursuit of the ball carrier. He has great speed and agility which helps him beat blockers to the spot.
It will take time for Thomas to learn Jeremy Pruitt‘s defensive schemes, but once he does, it will be hard to keep him off the field. Florida State does have two veteran linebackers in Smith and fellow senior Christian Jones, but beyond that, there isn’t much experience within the unit.
Thomas’ road to Tallahassee had a few bumps, but now that he’s on campus, expect to see him on the field early.
