Settle in.
The next big thing is officially on the way.
On Friday, Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher named redshirt freshman Jameis Winston the starting quarterback for the Seminoles. Winston is one of the most-hyped recruits in recent memory, and as a result, has enormous expectations as he takes over as the Florida State quarterback.
Noles fans have been eagerly awaiting his arrival for over two years. As a senior in high school, Winston was named MVP of the Elite 11 camp. Following that performance, camp director Trent Dilfer said that Winston would one day be the first overall selection in the NFL Draft whenever he came out.
Can he live up to the considerable hype? It appears we won’t have to wait long to find out.
On Labor Day, the Seminoles open their season and ACC schedule against conference newcomer Pittsburgh. While the Panthers aren’t expected to compete for the ACC Championship, it’s a difficult environment for an untested freshman quarterback to make his debut.
Winston beat out sophomore Jacob Coker, who battled him all through camp. Fisher said the decision wasn’t as easy as some on the outside perhaps thought it was.
“It’s one of the toughest decisions I’ve had to go through,” Fisher said. “We truly have two very good quarterbacks and I feel comfortable with both in the game. But Jameis will be the starter and we’re very comfortable with that.”
For Noles fans, the long awaited arrival is only a matter of days away.
Jameis Winston is coming.
Remember his name.
