Ohio State vs. Northwestern: Who Rises and Who Falls in BCS Rankings?
Who to watch in Ohio State vs. Northwestern
Last week, football fans around the country waited most of the day on Saturday to watch the highly-anticipated Big Ten game of the week. The Ohio State Buckeyes were taking on the Wisconsin Badgers. Ohio State came out of their first true test of the season as the victors, and really showed what they were capable of.
Urban Meyer’s team has proven that they can score a lot of points, whether it is on the ground or through the air via Braxton Miller or Kenny Guiton. What was most impressive for the Buckeyes last week was their ability to shut down the dominant rushing attack of the Wisconsin Badgers. The Buckeye defense made their presence felt, and the Big Ten favorites showed what a complete team they were.
This week, there will be no rest for the Buckeyes. They believe they are the class of the Big Ten and to be the best, they must prove they can continue to beat the best. Next on the list are the Northwester Wildcats on the road in Evanston. The Wildcats will be coming at the Badgers with a different look on offense. The Badgers lined up behind their massive offensive line and attempted to run the ball down the throats of the Buckeyes, which did not work.
This week, the Wildcats will be running a spread offense featuring a two-quarterback system. Northwestern will also bring a rushing attack that is both fast and elusive into this week’s matchup. Here is a look at some of the players to watch in the Big Ten game of the Week.
Northwestern Running Back Venric Mark
Mark will be back for the first time this season and this speedy back is ready for action. Coach Pat Fitzgerald is reluctant to release to information on what capacity Mark will be seen in this week’s matchup, but the Buckeyes should expect to see him in action, possibly even in the return game. Running back Treyvon Green has filled in very well for Mark and will be vital to the Wildcats' offense as well.
Ohio State Quarterback Braxton Miller
Miller has had quite a career at Ohio State and unfortunately had to miss some time with a knee injury earlier this season. This allowed backup quarterback Kenny Guiton an opportunity to shine, but last week Miller quickly remembered what he means to this Buckeye Offense. Expect to see Miller play even better this week.
Ohio State Wide Receiver Corey Brown
Buckeye head coach Urban Meyer has continuously called out Corey Brown this season, asking for more from the wideout. Meyer truly believes that Brown is one of the premier receivers in the Big Ten and fans should be ready for a huge game from him at any time.
Ohio State Linebacker Curtis Grant
This junior middle linebacker has loads of talent. He is a young man who the Buckeyes expect big things from every game. This week, his role at middle linebacker will be very important against the spread, especially with the return of Venrik Mark alongside Kain Colter in the backfield.
Northwestern Quarterback Trevor Siemian
Siemian will split playing time with Colter under center. His passing style is a bit more refined than Colter’s, but what he really brings to the table is the ability for the Wildcats to get both Colter and Siemian on the field at the same time.
Northwestern Coach Pat Fitzgerald
Here is a man whose stock is on the rise in college football. He knows how to motivate a team and shares credit for victories very well. His name has been in the air for other coaching opportunities. It is unclear whether he aspires to leave Northwestern or not, but when the spotlight is on, look for him to put it all on the line for a victory.
