The Baylor Bears cruised to victory in their first game of the 2014 college football season and should have no problem doing the same thing in their second contest. However, as a result of Heisman hopeful Bryce Petty suffering a back injury in Week 1, Petty should sit out against the Northwestern State Demons this weekend.

According to SI Wire, Baylor coach Art Briles has announced that Petty is unlikely to play this week.

No offense to the Demons, but they are no match for the No. 10 ranked Baylor Bears. Really, the only reason for Petty to play, other than the fact that he is the starting quarterback, is to put up some impressive stats to help make his case for the Heisman Trophy. Other than that, Baylor could play with its second-string QB and easily come away with the victory.

This game, unless if Baylor loses, will have no implications on the Bears making the College Football Playoff. Games against Oklahoma, Texas and other Big 12 opponents will.

I can easily see why Petty would want to play. He is competitive and probably wants to win college football’s most famous trophy.

However, the Bears do not need Petty to beat Northwestern State. They need him healthy for the rest of the season. If sitting out one game, or however many it may be means Petty will be good to go for the tougher opponents, then Petty should sit out. Now, obviously if Petty is ready to go, pain-free, then play him.

According to the rumors, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
