Last week, the South Carolina Gamecocks turned their season around by defeating the Georgia Bulldogs in a huge SEC East match-up. After a disappointing opening loss to the Texas A&M Aggies, the Gamecocks desperately needed a win over a big-time opponent in order to get back into the SEC title discussion as well as give themselves the momentum and confidence necessary to defeat future opponents like Auburn, Missouri and Clemson.
Next up for the Gamecocks is a trip to Nashville, TN, where they will face the struggling Vanderbilt Commodores.
Vanderbilt is coming off of its first win of the season in a comeback victory over the UMass Minutemen. Luck was on the Commodores’ side as UMass missed a few major opportunities to take control of the game, including a missed 22-yard field goal at the end of the game. However, a win is a win, and the first win of Derek Mason’s head coaching career at Vandy is huge for both the program and its fans.
The game between the Gamecocks and the Commodores will take place at 7:30 EST on the SEC Network. South Carolina should dominate the match-up from the opening kick, due to the weakness of Vanderbilt’s offense. Quarterback Patton Robinette has played well for the Black and Gold, but, unless he shows that he’s capable of something far beyond what he’s shown so far this season, the Commodores’ offense should struggle once again.
Vanderbilt’s defense won’t do it any favors either. The defense is allowing an average of 411 yards per game, and South Carolina, who was expected to be a defensive-minded team, has won most of its games through offense, not defense. The Gamecocks’ offense led by running back Mike Davis and quarterback Dylan Thompson will run riot on Vanderbilt’s young, inexperienced defense en route to a big victory. Expect the final score to be somewhere around 38 – 10.
