Florida Gators Should Make a Quarterback Change

The Florida Gators are at a crossroads heading into their fourth game of the 2014 season. The Gators sit at 2-1 after a 42-21 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday. Now, Florida has an off week, and if head coach Will Muschamp and offensive coordinator Kurt Roper are going to make a change at quarterback, this would be the time to do so.

Junior Jeff Driskel has struggled mightily so far in 2014, completing just 65-of-116 (56 percent) of his passes on the season for 636 yards and five touchdowns, with three interceptions. The low point of the Driskel era may have come on Saturday against Alabama, when he completed just nine-of-28 through the air for 93 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions.

Muschamp faces a very tough dilemma at the quarterback spot. The Florida head man is fighting to keep his job, and Driskel seems like the player best suited to win games right now for the Gators. If Muschamp knew that next year was guaranteed for him in Gainesville, he might bench Driskel in favor of freshman Treon Harris, who was two-for-two through the air against Eastern Michigan, with both passes going for touchdowns. However, Harris did not play against the Kentucky Wildcats or Alabama.

Florida fans are unhappy with the play of the offense and many are calling for Harris to be the quarterback when the Gators face the Tennessee Volunteers next Saturday in Knoxville. However, Muschamp has given no indication that he is ready to make a switch at quarterback, despite the obvious struggles of Driskel.

Perhaps the week off will allow Roper and Driskel to get on the same page before next week. If not, the Gators could be in for a long road as the SEC schedule progresses.
