Having won all three of their games by a wide margin, the Ole Miss Rebels are looking to win a fourth by a decent amount heading into conference play next week. Sure, Ole Miss already has a conference victory, but Vanderbilt looks to be the bottom-dweller this season and Ole Miss takes on a very talented Alabama team next week.
Many people might think the Memphis Tigers are just a pushover in this game, but in the one true test they had this season, the Tigers lost to UCLA by just a touchdown. Memphis might not be a power conference team or one that will contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff, but it is one that could end up giving Ole Miss fits.
Led by Bo Wallace, the Rebels have been in good hands all season long and for the past couple of years. The senior quarterback and third-year starter is completing over 75 percent of his passes for 1,023 yards and nine touchdowns with four interceptions to go along with it. Wallace has been as solid as they come and three of his four interceptions came in the first game of the season. Five wide outs have caught more than 10 passes and the same five guys have racked up over 100 yards receiving. Cody Core leads the team in yards with 236 and touchdowns, 4, to go along with 12 catches while Vince Sanders is tied with Laquon Treadwell for the team lead in receptions with 15. Sanders also has 225 yards and two scores while Treadwell has 184 yards and a touchdown. The run game hasn’t been nearly as impressive, ranking 80th in the nation as Jaylen Walton leads the way with just 121 yards and two scores on 19 carries.
Memphis’ offense has been able to put up large amounts of points without having to gain an excess amount of yards. The Tigers rank 13th in points per game while ranking just 53rd in passing yards per game and 26th in rushing yards per game. Second-year starting quarterback Paxton Lynch has racked up an average of 255.3 yards per game through the air and has a total of 766 yards and five touchdown passes on the season. Don’t let Lynch’s accurate arm fool you, he also has some wheels as he has 77 yards rushing to go along with three touchdowns on the ground. Keiwone Malone has been the target of choice for the sophomore quarterback, connecting with the wide out 15 times for 201 yards, but the team’s second-leading receiver, Alan Cross, leads the team with three touchdowns on 127 yards and eight catches. This team’s young talent is the main reason for its 2-1 record as sophomore running back Doroland Dorceus leads the team with 218 yards and four touchdowns on 5.7 yards per carry.
Defensively, the Tigers have been solid this season — especially since they have played an electric offense like UCLA’s. Memphis ranks 28th in the nation, allowing just under 20 points per game, and 36th in the nation, allowing 337 yards per contest. Ole Miss has been even more impressive on this side of the ball, ranking third in points allowed (10.3 per game) and 15th in total yards allowed with 296 per game. The crowd is sure to be electric for this night game at Ole Miss between the Rebels and Tigers
Memphis will travel to Ole Miss to take on the Rebels at 7:30 p.m. EST on Saturday, Sept. 27. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN 3.
PREDICTION: Memphis 17, Ole Miss 31
