When it rains it pours. The University of Michigan can’t catch a break. A horrendous incomplete pass call by officials both on the field and in the booth certainly didn’t help late in the fourth quarter, but that’s not what lost Michigan the game.

For most of the season it has been the Michigan offense letting the team down, but last night it was the defense that failed to show up.

Through their first four games of the season, Rutgers was averaging just over 240 passing yards per game. Last night against Michigan, they had 402 yards passing. Michigan made Gary Nova look like Jameis Winston. Rutgers had 476 yards of total offense and converted 50 percent of their third downs. It was an absolutely embarrassing performance and shows that the problems at Michigan aren’t just confined to one side of the ball.

The offense actually had a solid performance for the Wolverines. Devin Gardner only turned the ball over once and had a couple of rushing touchdowns. As a team, the Wolverines had 336 total yards, 18 first downs and their time of possession was 29:14. It wasn’t anything special, but it was enough to win the football game. Michigan just can’t seem to put together a quality performance on both sides of the ball, and Brady Hoke is running out of answers. Last night’s game is only adding fuel to the fire when it comes to the “Fire Hoke” and “Fire Brandon” rumblings.

Michigan traditionally doesn’t make mid-season coaching changes, but they may have to this year. There are no signs that things will be getting better any time soon. With games still left at Michigan State and at Ohio State, the best Michigan can really hope for is a 6-6 record and a December bowl game. Even that, however, is wishful thinking.
