Quarterback Taysom Hill’s career could be in jeopardy after tests revealed he had torn every major ligament in his fractured left leg. The injury is reported to be a lot worse than the Cougars initially expected, and could force Hill out of action for at least 4-6 months.
Hill’s injury is reminiscent of Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann’s fracture to his lower right leg, which ended the two-time Super Bowl winner’s career. It is entirely plausible that Hill will never return to play at the level BYU needs or even make a full recovery.
The main concern for Hill and Cougar faithful is the torn ligaments. Although many players have fractured bones and recovered, ligament damage is more complicated and threatening.
Hill fractured his left leg in a defeat against Utah State University this past Friday. This is the second time the Idaho native sustained a season-ending injury by the hands of USU. The BYU quarterback underwent a two-hour surgery on Saturday, which required one plate and eight screws. The injury left BYU vulnerable against USU, who put together an impressive comeback in the wake of Hill’s absence.
The quarterback was looking like an absolute world-beater this season, almost looking like the Cristiano Ronaldo of college football. The BYU gunslinger was looking virtually unstoppable as he ran around the field, juking opponents and completing passes with ease. Hill was also being considered as a dark horse candidate for the Heisman Trophy by a number of pundits.
BYU fans will be hoping for Hill to make a complete recovery and comeback where he left off this season. While they wait, though, they must face the reality that a big-time bowl game is now out of reach.
