After an opening game loss to the No. 1 team in the nation by just six points, the Oklahoma State Cowboys have won four consecutive games to jump all the way to No. 16 in the recent polls. With the conference season freshly underway, the Cowboys will look to contend for a conference title for a second straight year.
The Kansas Jayhawks made some steps in the right direction recently, and no, it wasn’t something they did on the field. Head coach Charlie Weis was fired for lacking to produce an adequate contender in three seasons of being the program’s head coach and the Jayhawks will move forward with an interim head coach for the rest of the year.
Oklahoma State’s passing attack has improved vastly this season under the direction of first-year starter Daxx Garman who is starting in place of the injured J.W. Walsh. Garman has been solid for the 31st-best passing offense in the nation, completing 59 percent of his passes for 1,200 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions. Brandon Sheperd has been the leading receiver for the Cowboys’ offense this season, catching 16 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns. Marcell Ateman, Jhajuan Seales and David Glidden have all excelled in the receiving game, too, as all of them have caught at least 10 passes for over 200 yards apiece. The rushing offense hasn’t been as successful, ranking 74th in the nation as Desmond Roland leads the way with 304 yards and six touchdowns. Running back Tyreek Hill might be the most dangerous player on the field, however, as he has rushed for 196 yards while catching 14 passes out of the backfield for 131 yards and a touchdown.
Kansas has had one of the most lethargic offenses in the entire nation this season, ranking 115th in passing yards per game, 70th in rushing yards and 124th in points per contest. Sophomore quarterback Montell Cozart has struggled mightily this season, passing for just 693 yards and five touchdowns while failing in the accuracy department, completing 49 percent of his passes and throwing seven picks. Tony Pierson has to be frustrated with the lack of adequate QB play as he’s the team’s leading receiver with 14 catches for 163 yards and a touchdown. Jimmay Mundine and Nick Harwell have also contributed a lot to the receiving game, catching a combined 28 passes for 247 yards and two scores. The run game has been a little more productive than the pass game as freshman running back Corey Avery leads the way with 310 yards and two touchdowns on 4.4 yards per carry. Junior back De’Andre Mann is second on the team with 303 yards rushing on 5.7 yards per touch.
Defensively, the Jayhawks have been one of the least successful teams in the Big 12. Kansas ranks 76th in points allowed per game while ranking closer to the bottom of the nation in total yards allowed per game with 419 — allowing nearly 200 rush yards a game. Oklahoma State has fared much better on defense this season, ranking 69th in points allowed per game while allowing just 378 total yards per game. Memorial Stadium will be rocking while hoping for a huge upset win over Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma State will travel to Kansas to take on the Jayhawks at 4 p.m. EST on Saturday, Oct. 11. The game will be broadcasted on FOX Sports 1.
PREDICTION: Oklahoma State 38, Kansas 17
