Shocking news is coming out of Athens, Georgia today as running back Todd Gurley has been suspended indefinitely for an “alleged violation of NCAA rules.” This is a very vague description, but it seems like Gurley is going to be out for quite some time as this investigation gets underway. As such, he’s probably no longer in the Heisman discussion.
The whole developing story comes as a shock to the college football world; most were picking Gurley to win the Heisman trophy as college football’s best player. However, that seems like more of a dream at this point.
Injured most of last season, Gurley bounced back and was stronger than ever this season. So far, Gurley already has 773 yards and eight touchdowns and has been getting stronger and stronger from week to week. More importantly where Georgia is concerned, Gurley will surely be out this weekend against Missouri.
In a virtual SEC East championship game, the Bulldogs are now behind the eight ball. They were already going to be up against a sold-out Missouri crowd as well as projected first-round draft picks Shane Ray and Markus Golden on the defensive ends. Now they’re without their top player.
All isn’t lost for Georgia, though. True freshman Nick Chubb has been solid in limited playing time this year, rushing for 224 yards on 31 carries while scoring twice. He’s likely to get the bulk of the carries on Saturday.
If he can’t get the job done and Georgia loses the game, today can be marked as the moment the Georgia season and Gurley’s Heisman campaign went down the drain.
