Now that is the Oregon Ducks we all know and love. In Saturday’s Pac-12 showdown between Oregon and the UCLA Bruins, the Ducks managed to win by the score of 42-30 (UCLA decided to start scoring in the fourth quarter when the game was out of reach). In the process, QB Marcus Mariota’s Heisman hopes shined bright.
You could say Mariota had a Heisman-like performance. The QB threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 75 yards rushing and two more scores on the ground. Oh yeah, he also had this amazing play (among others):
Can someone say … Heisman moment? Nothing like fumbling the football, picking up that football and then running it in for the score.
Although there are many Heisman contenders out there (I’m looking at you, Dak Prescott), and the season is still young, Mariota is without a doubt one of the favorites to win the Heisman.
I’ve said it once and by golly, I’ll say it again: Racking up the stats is one thing, but racking up those stats against top-ranked teams is the best thing any Heisman candidate can do. Despite the score being heavily in Oregon’s favor entering the fourth, UCLA is a top-ranked team.
In a season where Mississippi State’s Prescott is putting up Tim Tebow-like numbers, Mariota has to be on his game every single, well, game. He also has to make sure his team continues to win.
Capturing the Pac-12 title and making the College Football Playoff would certainly help.
Regardless, Oregon absolutely hammered UCLA today. Arizona may have beaten Oregon last week, but all eyes are definitely back on the Ducks and Mariota.
