On Saturday afternoon, the Georgia Bulldogs looked elite while the opposing Missouri Tigers could not get anything started all game. The Tigers’ passing offense, in particular, looked like something out of Div II. While Missouri’s defense gave up 34 points, their performance was not horrendous and they were handed some terrible situations by an offense that hardly showed up.
Some people may blame the Tigers’ quarterback Maty Mauk for the loss, but there were a few other factors to consider. Mauk gave up four interceptions throughout the game, but two were off of mishandled passes to wide receivers. Additionally, Mauk was sacked three times and hurried well over 10 times, which did not help the case for his offensive line, which struggled against Georgia’s dominant defense.
On the day, Mauk threw 21 passes, giving up four interceptions and completing just nine passes. His receivers dropped passes, the Bulldogs’ defensive backs looked fantastic and unfortunately, Missouri was only able to get things done in the rushing game, which they used very little. Marcus Murphy and Russell Hansbrough combined for 15 rushing attempts for 64 yards; which is roughly 4.3 yards per carry. Hutson Mason was the superior quarterback, completing 79 percent of his passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. He showed poise in the pocket and rushed for a touchdown, as well.
The Bulldogs’ running backs also had a great game in the absence of Todd Gurley. Freshman Nick Chubb showed the team that he can be a workhorse running back; rushing for 143 yards on 38 carries with a touchdown. Sophomore Brendan Douglas rushed 13 times for a total of 65 yards (five yards per carry). Douglas’ touchdown leap was the most exciting play of the game.
Overall, the Bulldogs showed on Saturday that whether or not they have their star running back, they also have a steady passing game and a great defense that can shut down other top tier teams. What is also becoming increasingly apparent from the outcome of this game is that Maty Mauk gets very unsteady when he is under consistent pressure. Missouri’s offensive line will need to protect him better in the future.
