Star RB Todd Gurley was suspended indefinitely earlier this week for allegedly violating one of the aggressively hypocritical NCAA rules that exploit young athletes. The Georgia Bulldogs‘ star running back and possible Heisman Trophy contender may have lost his season. Some have even said that the loss of Gurley may mean the end of Georgia’s season due to their heavy use of rushing on offense.

While his absence was noticeable during Saturday’s win over the Missouri Tigers, it looks like the team’s rushing attack is in good hands with the freshman-sophomore duo of Nick Chubb and Brendan Douglas. The two combined for 52 carries, gaining a total of 208 yards and two touchdowns.

Those numbers look pretty much par-for-the-course compared to Gurley’s numbers so far this year. The obvious difference here is yards per carry; as Gurley has averaged 8.2 yards per carry this year, Chubb and Douglas had roughly 4.1 yards per carry on Saturday. This is a notable gap, but the bottom line is: the young backups got the job done and the team came away with a dominant victory.

Both of the Bulldogs’ rushers made great plays on Saturday afternoon. Possibly the most exciting play of the game was Douglas’ touchdown run which culminated in a great leap over the line in the face of multiple defenders. The freshman Chubb also demonstrated that he is not just a ball carrier, but also a receiving option, catching four passes for 31 yards, making him the second most productive receiver of the day.

While the rushing game was impressive for the Bulldogs, quarterback Hutson Mason was on point, completing 79 percent of passes, throwing one touchdown to Michael Bennett and hitting eight different receivers for receptions.

Obviously, the Georgia Bulldogs want their Heisman candidate back in the lineup, but what is important to take away from Saturday’s win is that the defense looked great and the offense is in very capable hands even in Gurley’s absence.
