The Pac-12 favorite USC Trojans will be kicking off their homecoming game against Colorado on Saturday night. For obvious reasons, the odds are in the Trojans’ favor. Across the board, USC is the better team talent wise. However, from the past couple of weeks in college football we’ve learned that the obvious, isn’t so obvious after all.
Consider the Trojans’ surprising defeats this season against Boston College and Arizona State. Based on stats, records and rankings, these should have been obvious wins. This leads us to believe that anything is possible on any given night of college football, despite the obvious.
Based on previous games that should have been an obvious win against an inferior opponent, Steve Sarkisian and the Trojans have struggled to seal the deal in the fourth quarter. This is likely because they are still in search of their identity this season. Whether they will be a power rushing team or an aerial assault team is still under question. The Trojans’ inconsistency in putting away their opponent could pose a problem against the underdog Colorado. It is not likely, but we’ve all seen it happen before.
Colorado is still a young team that is undergoing a rigorous process of rebuilding. For the past two years, the Buffs have been trying to shake off that losing mentality. They have shown great improvement this season, thanks to the contributions of their starting QB Sefo Liufau and their go-to WR Nelson Spruce.
For Colorado to stand any chance of defeating the Trojans this Saturday, they will need to get off to a quick start early in the first quarter by maximizing Spruce’s availability down field. It will also be paramount that they capitalize on turnover, especially on special teams.
When all of the smoke settles on the astroturf and the game clock stops counting down, the USC Trojans will beat the Colorado Buffaloes 35-10.
