When the Georgia Bulldogs were forced to suspend star running back Todd Gurley, things appeared to be bleak for the remainder of their 2014 season. However, those that believed that had not yet seen true freshman running back Nick Chubb play.
Chubb had shown flashes of brilliance in Georgia’s first five games this season. He had rushed 31 times for 224 yards in those games while backing up Gurley, who was one of the favorites for the Heisman Trophy.
However, when Gurley was suspended two weeks ago, Chubb suddenly became the featured back. And to say he has done well in Gurley’s absence would be quite an understatement. In his first try as the starter, Chubb carried 38 times for 143 yards as the Bulldogs won, on the road, against the Missouri Tigers.
On Saturday, Chubb got his second start of the year, and he had an even bigger game. In a 45-32 win over the Arkansas Razorbacks, Chubb carried 33 times for 212 yards with two touchdowns.
Head coach Mark Richt knew he had a talent when he landed Chubb, but Richt could not have envisioned this type of production this early in Chubb’s career. The Bulldogs have certainly missed Gurley, but they have not missed a beat with Chubb as the starter over the last two games.
Georgia continues to be the best team in the SEC East, and they also became the first team this season from the East to beat a team from the mighty Western Division.
While Georgia continues to hope to get Gurley back this season, they could not be happier with the play of Chubb.
